HSD Parents and Guardians,
The Hermiston School District offers Talented and Gifted (TAG) services for students in grades K-12 who show outstanding academic or intellectual ability or potential. We want every family to know that you can recommend your child for TAG screening.
Who can make a recommendation?
Parents and guardians, classroom teachers, and students themselves can recommend a student. Anyone who knows the student's abilities or educational experience may make a referral.
How do I recommend my child?
Contact your child's school (principal, dean, or counselor) and let them know you would like your child considered for TAG screening. The school will send home a TAG Identification Process Form for you to complete, where you can share what you see at home, such as your child's learning, interests, and problem-solving. You are also welcome to submit additional information that supports your recommendation.
When can I make a recommendation?
Recommendations are accepted throughout the school year.
What does screening involve?
Once a student is recommended, the school's TAG committee reviews information about the student, including test scores, classroom work, grades, teacher observations, and your input. No single test or score decides eligibility. If the committee finds that individual testing would be helpful, they will ask for your written permission before any testing takes place. The outcome will be shared with you either way. If your child does not qualify, you have the right to appeal.
